Located minutes away from our Blue Ridge mountain cabins, the Cherokee County Historical Museum explores the legacy of Native American society and European settlement in the area. Housed in the historic Carnegie Library building in downtown Murphy, the museum is next door the Cherokee County Courthouse. Open weekdays from 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m., museum entrance costs $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for children.

The History of Murphy, North Carolina

Situated within the Blue Ridge Mountains at the confluence of the Valley and Hiwassee Rivers in North Carolina, is the city of Murphy. In addition to being the largest city in Cherokee County, it also serves as the county seat. Murphy is about 360 miles from the state’s capital of Raleigh. The history of Murphy, North Carolina is truly fascinating. This area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee Indian nation and they named the area Tlanusi-yi. Translated, this means Leech Place because of a legend of a giant size leech known as Tlanusi that resided there.

ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships on the Nantahala River!

Wow! The Nantahala River is set to have the ICF Canoe Freestyle World Cup on September 7-9 and the World Championships in September 2-8, 2013.  Amazing athletes will compete doing a variety of moves and tricks.  It’s said to be the X-Games for Whitewater! 

Many locals and visitors have rafted and canoed for years down the Nantahala, enjoying the cool waters that flow from Nantahala Lake, now locals and visitors are in for a treat that this area has never seen before.  A “Wave Shaper” is being  constructed into the river, making for a great feature in the competition and is going to be a draw for pro athletes, locals, beginners, and youth paddlers alike for years to come.
